A2 and N2 near Eindhoven is open again, complete with new tunnel box

The last work on the A2/N2 ring road near Eindhoven was completed on Sunday. For a month, work was carried out on a new tunnel box, which connects the industrial areas in the north and west of the city with each other and with the A58 motorway. All lanes have been reopened since early Monday morning.

The tunnel construction work began on 28 July. Road users had to take into account significant traffic nuisance and delays of up to an hour between the Batadorp and Leenderheide interchanges, but the inconvenience was not too bad in the end.

The tunnel will make Eindhoven Airport Eindhoven, Brainport Industries Campus (BIC), Westfields and Flight Forum on the west side and the Goods Distribution Center (GDC) in Acht more accessible. GDC freight traffic will also have a direct connection to the A58.

Tunnel container of millions of kilos
Two hundred people worked day and night on the installation of the tunnel box of millions of kilos under the A2 motorway and the N2 ring road.

“The greatest risks in such a project have already been passed. They mainly concern what kind of soil you find and what the groundwater level is. Now it is really in the final phase,” said Alderman Stijn Steenbakkers of the municipality of Eindhoven last week when he took a look at the project.

In use next summer
Traffic is not yet able to drive through the new tunnel. This still has to be completed and access roads have to be made. The tunnel is expected to be put into operation next summer.
