A year after the earthquakes in Turkey: “Family is afraid when a truck drives by”

A year ago, Turkey and Syria were hit by a devastating earthquake. The damage in both countries was enormous. Sultan Unal (60) from Castricum has family living in Turkey and still feels a lot of sadness when she thinks back to this event. “It still hurts me a lot.”

Sultan Unal was born in Turkey. Her family still lives here, in the town of Kayseri. Her family is now doing well, but the period of the earthquakes continues to feel like just a day ago. “My family slept in a car for a number of days because they were so afraid that their house would collapse. This was a very uncertain period for them.”

Not much has changed

Now, a year later, the sadness of Sultan and her family is still great. “Fortunately, my family lives safely at home again. But there are so many people who still don’t have a home, they live in container homes and suffer from the cold. The situation has improved in a number of places, but the vast majority has not changed. “

“What happened to all the money raised worldwide?”

“My family and residents from Turkey also wonder: What happened to all the money raised worldwide? That is not immediately reflected when you look at the living conditions of the people in Turkey.”

Missing

Sultan watches the Turkish news on television every day. Especially these days, she pays extra attention to everything that is happening in the country. “It’s still terrible to see. So many people are still missing to this day. Many children have still not been found. Parents in Turkey are desperate. Everyone is scared because of what happened to them. Are they still in the rubble or were they taken? No one knows.”

Sultan’s family is still reeling from the aftermath of last year’s earthquakes. “My family is very afraid that it will happen again. My niece recently told me: ‘I am still afraid when, for example, a truck drives through the street. I hear the sound and immediately think of the earthquakes. .”
