A year after Taylor Hawkins’ death: Foo Fighters’ Josh Freese behind the drums | show

Josh Freese is the drummer on Sunday during the special live stream of the American band Foo Fighters. There was already a lot of speculation beforehand about who would drum during the free-to-view show, which serves as a warm-up for the new album from the band around Dave Grohl.

But Here We Are, due out on June 2, is Foo Fighters’ first new album since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins last March. A replacement for Hawkins was not yet known. At the start of the live stream, the band played a joke on the viewers. Several well-known drummers passed by in the live stream, including Chad Smith and Tommy Lee. Finally, the picture jumped to Josh Freese, who convinced the remaining band members to start playing.

With the live stream, Foo Fighters seems to confirm that Freese will join the band’s upcoming tour as a drummer. Freese was previously the drummer for The Vandals, Guns N’ Roses and Nine Inch Nails, among others. In the coming weeks the band will play a number of shows in the United States and in June the band will perform at the German festivals Rock am Ring and Rock im Park, among others.

Hawkins died unexpectedly in March 2022 at the age of 50. He died in a hotel while the band was on a South American tour. The official cause of death was cardiac arrest. Traces of cannabis, opiates and antidepressants were found in the blood of the world-famous drummer. The band canceled the remaining performances of their tour. In September 2022, Foo Fighters performed again for the first time at two benefit concerts organized in honor of Hawkins. The drummer had been with Foo Fighters since 1997 – a few years after its foundation.
