In Oud-Wedderveen, between Wedde and Vriescheloo, a wolf was seen on Friday afternoon. A video of the animal is quickly spreading among farmers, residents and hunters.
That’s how hunters do it, says Henk Tiesinga, who received the video ‘from Stadskanaal’. ‘Jan’, standing next to him, is said to have made the video. “Nope!” shouts Jan. I don’t know anything. That was Johan Siefkes.”
‘The Netherlands is too small for the wolf’
Siefkes, also a hunter, from Pekela, does not know where the film comes from, but does know that the wolf is walking in ‘his territory’. He’s not so happy about that. “And I don’t think the farmers around me either. The Netherlands is too small for the wolf. I think and hope this one is on its way. If he goes to live here, farmers will suffer a lot. A wolf goes for easy prey: cattle and sheep. Why trot when you can eat lying down?”
The wolf is a very beautiful animal, says Siefkes. But he doesn’t fit here anymore. “And there’s nothing you can do about it, can you? They have a protected status.”
Video spread quickly
Five minutes later Siefkes calls back. He knows who made the video.
The conscious resident of Oud-Wedderveen does not want to be in the newspaper by name. She is amazed at the speed with which the video she made this afternoon has been shared. “We only shared it with our neighbors because we have a lot of people with sheep in our neighborhood.”
Chased by crows
The film star and her husband came by car from Vlagtwedde on Friday afternoon when they saw the wolf crossing the Wedderweg. ,,He had trouble with the guardrail because it is quite wide, but in the end he jumped over it and into the field. We were able to follow him for a long time. Between the houses, up the field towards Wedderbergen. At one point he was chased by crows and he went towards Bellingwolde. Then we lost him. He is just as gray as the land, so you won’t see him there anymore. The video is from the very first moment we saw him.”
