A tough defeat, but still a great football evening for amateur club OJC

There are always surprises in the national cup tournament. OJC Rosmalen also hoped for a stunt on Tuesday evening, but Eredivisionist Almere City FC was far too strong: 1-8. Nevertheless, the amateur club spoke of a successful evening. “It was a great challenge for the football players, and it was financially interesting for the club.”

The fact that OJC Rosmalen qualified for the main tournament of the KNVB Cup was not unique. The amateurs have played against a professional club before, the last time in the 2018/2019 season. ADO Den Haag then won 0-6.

“It’s cool to see these players in real life.”

OJC Rosmalen did not get a dream draw with Almere City FC, but of course an Eredivisie club does not come to De Groote Wielen sports park every year. “I think it’s cool to see these players in real life,” says Sven (7) from Rosmalen, who was standing on the sidelines with his friends. “Normally I only see them on television.”

The difference in level between the two clubs was clear. Nevertheless, the last team in the Third Division showed that he can play decent football after an early 0-2 deficit. Mouad Hassan from Den Bosch in particular was a real attraction in the vanguard, he also scored for the 1-2. That was also the only achievement, because the visitors did not let it happen. After a 1-3 halftime score, coach Alex Pastoor’s team finished 1-8.

“Luckily we have a lot of volunteers who help us.”

Despite the defeat, it was a successful evening for the home club, which welcomed more than 1,660 spectators. Treasurer Bernard Brouwer: “Financially, the KNVB Cup is a bonus, although it only becomes really interesting when you go one more round. However, do not forget that there are significant costs in terms of organization and safety. For example, we had to create a separate entrance for visitors with a separate toilet facility. Fortunately, we have many volunteers who help us on such an evening.”

What may also be said: the evening passed without any discord. “It’s nice to be able to show our club to many people this evening. With more than 2,300 members, we are one of the largest associations in the Netherlands. And with the growth of the De Groote Wielen district, we expect even more growth. Although it remains a challenge to ensure that all young people can continue to exercise,” says Brouwer.
