The Norwegian was barely a mile short of the ME, but the European record was born.

Norway’s prodigy Jakob Ingebrigtsen broke a fierce European record on Saturday in Eugene in the Diamond League final.
The guy from Vuonoma stopped the clock as the winner in 3:43.73 and improved his own old record by almost three seconds.
Second place in the United States pushed the host country Yared Nuguse (3.43,97).
Mailin ME is legendary of Hicham el-Guerrouj 3:43.13 from 1999. Other men who ran under 3:45.00 are Noah Ngeny (3:43,40 in the same race in Rome with el-Guerrouj) and Noureddine Morceli (3.44.39 from 1993).
Ingebrigtsen’s result is therefore the third best of all time and Nugusen’s fourth best.
The mile replaced the men’s 1,500 meters in the Eugene final. This stems from the competition city’s long middle-distance running traditions and, of course, the fact that in the United States the mile is a unit of length.
– Mail has a glow. For example, in the UK in recent years, TV news had to be moved so that viewers could follow the ME attempt of the golden mile of the Oslo race live, says Iltalehti’s athletics expert Arto Bryggare.
The old European record for a mile was held by Great Britain By Steve Cramin 3.46.32 from 1985.
Crazy season
The Norwegian won gold in the 5,000 meters and silver in the 1,500 meters at the World Championships in Budapest. This season, he has broken the European records of 1,500 meters (3:27.14) and 3,000 meters (7:24,00) as well as the 2,000 meters ME (4:43,13).
– I wouldn’t consider it impossible that he will also have MEs of 1,500 meters, mile and 3,000 meters in the future, Bryggare estimates.
