A surgeon uttered the stopping words to Anssi Kela after a serious accident

Paralysis was close in 2003, when Anssi Kela badly injured his back.

Musician Anssi Kela recalls in Studio Pääskysaari on MTV3 how he was able to fulfill his childhood dream and started driving in the Formula 3 class. In 2003, the first race was already waiting around the corner, when Kela was in the last test runs at Jurvan Botniaring. On the last lap of the day, Kela decided to try to squeeze another couple of tenths off his track time, with tragic consequences.

– I pulled volts with the formula and my back was badly broken, Kela says Jenni to Pääskysaari.

The operating surgeon came to see the patient after the operation. His words were arresting. He said that Kela’s spine had been damaged. The one that was the worst hit had partially penetrated the spinal cord.

– It was a hair’s breadth that I didn’t get paralyzed. There was a lot of luck in the accident.

– It made me think about how much sense it made. I tried to drive a couple of tenths faster during the test runs and almost ended up in a wheelchair.

However, a year after his accident, Kela got back into a formula car and drove his first race. He finished fourth.

– I know I was much happier than the winner. I had won much more than I could handle.
