There was a total of crashes the BBC including about 20 cyclists. However, all parties involved in the crash survived without injury and were able to continue to the end of the stage. The main body of the race slowed down after the crash so that the parties involved in the crash could catch up.

The previous stage of the tour of France saw a correspondingly big mass crash. However, the cause of the previous mass crash was not the tricks of the fans, but a slippery bend where the cyclists lost control of their vehicles.

It wasn’t the first time

Spectators have been busy with this year’s tours of France. Among other things Steff Crass had to leave the race when he was injured after colliding with a standing spectator on the road. Just a couple of days earlier, another spectator had collided with a cyclist.

As expected, the confusion caused by fans has received criticism on social media. In addition to cycling fans, many official cycling bodies, such as the teams’ own Twitter accounts, have asked fans to focus on the essentials.

Most recently, the official account of the Tour de France tweeted a video where a fan standing on the side of the road almost hit a cyclist. The tweet asked to pay attention to the competitors.

The crash caused by a fan’s selfie reminded many cycling fans of the mass crash in 2021. At the time, a fan was holding a message on a cardboard sign to his grandparents on the side of the road, which caused a massive crash. At the time, the fan holding the cardboard sign was fined 1200 euros.
