Nico Elvedi’s contract with Borussia Mönchengladbach expires in 2024. That’s why the Bundesliga club really wanted to sell its central defender in the summer in order to prevent Gladbach from leaving for a free transfer. Now suddenly there is a turnaround in the room.
There have been reports for weeks during the summer transfer window about Nico Elvedi’s impending move from Borussia Mönchengladbach to Wolverhampton Wanderers. Everton FC is also said to have courted the Swiss. However, a departure from Gladbach by Deadline Day did not materialize.
The defender’s contract only runs until 2024, so Borussia is threatened with a free transfer of their long-time regular player next summer.
The foals wanted to avoid such a scenario at all costs. But no club wanted to pay the transfer fee of around ten million euros.
Will Nico Elvedi stay at Gladbach?
But now there seems to be a turnaround at Elvedi. As “Bild” reports, the players want to approach Gladbach to negotiate a contract extension until at least 2025. However, an exit clause of ten million euros is to be anchored in the contract for next summer.
Elvedi himself also indicated to the paper that he would remain in the Lower Rhine.
“It was never the case that I wanted to leave here at any price. On the contrary, I’ve been here for eight years and really appreciate the club and all the people here,” said the 26-year-old, who signed for four million euros from FC Zurich in 2015 had moved to Gladbach.
“The last few weeks haven’t been easy, but we’ve always talked. Now I’m just looking forward to the games with Gladbach, I want to fight my way back into the team and of course we’ll talk about the future,” said Elvedi, who is in has only been on the pitch for seven minutes this season.
