The place itself looks simple: a mailbox, a wooden bench next to it, a narrow path leading to it with some green bushes around it. It is exactly what nurse Sietske had in mind when she came up with the idea. “In nature, in a place that radiates peace, where people can take a moment to think of their deceased.”
When care stops, the loss begins
In her Obstetrics department, Sietske sees how parents go home with a lot of sadness after a still birth or terminated pregnancy. “We are there for them during the birth, but after that our care naturally ends. While grief does not stop as soon as someone walks out of the hospital.” With the letterbox, she says, she wants to fill that void. “Anyone can go here outside of the hospital.”
