Water is a vital component for the body and it is crucial to give the necessary amount to our body.

Water is essential for life and health, and its importance is magnified as we age.. Although the percentage of water in our body decreases with age, it is still essential for its proper functioning. The distribution of water in our body varies between different organs and tissues, but it is present in all of them.

Not staying properly hydrated can have a negative impact on cognitive function, affecting attention, memory and reaction time due to reduced blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain, which is made up of 75% water.

A recent study carried out by researchers from the Rovira i Virgili University, the Institut d’Investigació Sanitària Pere Virgili and the Center de Recerca Biomèdica Xarxa de Fisiopatologia de l’Obesitat i la Nutrició, reveals the relationship between hydration and brain function in older people who are overweight or obese. It was found that those with low hydration experienced a decline in cognitive function over time, especially in men. On the other hand, those who stayed well hydrated improved their abilities in neuropsychological tests.

Preventing dehydration is crucial, and it is recommended to drink water even when you do not feel thirsty or have an immediate desire to do so. Consuming at least between 8 and 10 glasses of water a day, and more if you do physical activity, is essential to stay hydrated. Additionally, water-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, can contribute significantly to hydration. To ensure you drink enough water throughout the day, it is useful to set reminders on your mobile phone or carry a bottle of water with you to quench your thirst at any time. Staying hydrated is an investment in cognitive health as we age.
