A router that is more than four years old can be a security risk

A network router that is more than four years old should be replaced. An old device slows down the internet connection and can cause a data security risk.

Internet stuttering is not the only problem that can be associated with old network routers, but also causes a data security risk at worst. An aged device is not always offered new security updates and is vulnerable to cybercriminals.

– If the device is old enough, security updates may not be available for it, or making them is so difficult that the user just lets it be, DNA’s director of service development Ville Partanen tells.

According to Partanen, a good rule of thumb for a basic user is to change the router every four years. According to him, the alarming situation is when you notice that the internet is stuttering and you have to start the router often.

– At worst, a hacker might hijack such a device and use it for illegal activities. Especially in these times, it is important for everyone to take care of their own information security.

You can’t get good for cheap

Partanen urges those changing the router to think about the price. An inexpensive device does not work like the more expensive ones, and the capacity, quality and power of the device can be overshadowed by the more expensive ones.

– If you buy a 50-euro smartphone, it works differently than, say, a 250-euro device. The same applies to routers: you can’t expect the highest performance from a cheap device, notes Partanen.

The size of the apartment should be taken into account when choosing a router. When in a good location, the router can cover a 70-square-meter apartment.

– For example, in an apartment building, you should put the device between the rooms, for example on top of a cupboard or a cupboard. The worst place is inside a metal cabinet.

According to Partanen, a larger apartment can be expanded with a mesh system. The new router should also be WiFi 6 compatible.

– This ensures a reliable and fast connection to the entire apartment.

Partanen also advises to get a router from your own operator. In this case, the operator takes care of the data security of the device on behalf of the customer.
