A quarter of a million extra for tackling rural roads in Borger-Odoorn

The council of the municipality of Borger-Odoorn will allocate another 250,000 euros for next year to tackle the rural roads in the municipality. This money is in addition to the intended budget of 400,000 euros.

This became apparent during the discussion of the 2024 budget in the municipal council. Council parties Leefbaar Borger-Odoorn, Gemeentebelangen, CDA, D66 and PvdA submitted an amendment to this effect. All other parties went along with this, except GroenLinks. The same thing happened two years ago: an additional two and a half tons were released at the insistence of the council.

According to Eisso Kronenberg of Gemeentebelangen, the maintenance backlog remains enormous. “Reports of dangerous traffic situations regularly come in from the villages. Often caused by freight traffic, agricultural traffic, that takes different routes than the municipality had anticipated,” says Kronenberg.

According to him, this also creates dangerous situations for cyclists and walkers. In May, Kronenberg drew attention to the Zijtak in Odoornerveen, where the roadsides are in poor condition and holes have appeared in the road.

During the discussion of the Framework Memorandum in June, five parties submitted a motion to this effect, but according to Annemiek de Groot of Leefbaar Borger-Odoorn, this was not given priority. “The council cannot ignore a motion submitted by five parties and supported by sixteen councilors. Our rural roads regularly show shortcomings in the level of maintenance, which is dangerous for road users. That is why we are submitting an amendment to include this motion. “, says De Groot.
