Former top boxer Felix Verdejo was sentenced last Friday to two life sentences for the murder of a pregnant woman.
Verdejo, 30, kidnapped in April 2021 Keishla Rodríguez’sbeat the woman, drugged her, tied her limbs to a cement block and threw Rodríguez off the bridge into the lagoon.
Verdejo would have been the father of Rodríguez’s child, but the boxer wanted her to have an abortion.
Rodríguez was found two days later at the bottom of the lagoon when Verdejo called 911 anonymously and told the location of the woman’s body.
In the brutal murder operation, Verdejo was helped by his friend Luis Antonio Cádiz.
According to the autopsy, the former boxing star used fentanyl, which is about a hundred times stronger than morphine, to drug Rodríguez. It is often used, for example, in connection with anesthesia.
In addition, xylazine was found in the woman’s body, which has been developed for pain relief and muscle relaxation in large animals.
Many in Puerto Rico celebrated the outcome of the case, but Verdejo’s lawyer announced Friday that the boxer plans to appeal the verdict.
Verdejo has fought 29 matches as a professional, of which he has won 27. 17 of the victories have come by knockout.
