Referee Stéphanie Frappart will referee FC Bayern’s Champions League game against Copenhagen. The Frenchwoman is no stranger to Neuer, Müller and Co. – and not a good omen either.
FC Bayern Munich is experiencing a premiere in its 287th Champions League game. The home game on Wednesday (9 p.m./radio report BR24Sport) against FC Copenhagen will be led by Stephanie Frappart. The French referee was nominated for the group game by the European Football Union on Monday.
Frappart Referee at the DFB World Cup exit
The 39-year-old is of course no stranger to the German national players around Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller and Serge Gnabry. Frappart was also on the pitch in the bitter preliminary round elimination of the DFB selection at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar against Costa Rica (4:2) a year ago. It was a historic mission: the Frenchwoman was the first female referee to referee a game at a men’s World Cup.
It is Frappart’s third appearance in the Champions League, the first of the current season. In Real Madrid’s 5-1 win against Celtic Glasgow last season, the Frenchwoman stood out with three penalty whistles in the first half of the game. But she is not entirely new for FC Bayern either: in the past she led two European Cup games for the Bayern footballers.
