“It is special that it is designed in a completely contemporary way. It still follows the old rules, but you can sail on it with twenty people. It has nine cabins and a day room, and there is a lot of solidarity on such a ship,” says Christel.

Now De Vriendschap is a modern sailing ship with every comfort: on board there are a total of twenty beds, two showers, two toilets and a fully equipped kitchen. There is electricity, hot and cold running water, and central heating for the cooler days.

Freedom and connection

“When I come on deck of De Vriendschap, I feel a special freedom. Freedom and connection, because you have to do it together. You cannot hoist that sail on your own – it is all manual work, so you really do everything together,” says Christel.

This year, De Vriendschap will not participate in the Three Cities Race in Enkhuizen. The ship remains peacefully in the harbor. People who are interested can visit the ship.
