A long career ended in bankruptcy – Took out a large bank loan

Timo Sarpaneva’s employment with Iittala ended in 1998 with dismissal.

Glass artist From Timo Sarpaneva (1926–2006) narrative documentary series Sarpaneva and sense of form ends today.

In the last part, we proceed to the 1990s. At the turn of the decade, Sarpaneva had worked her entire career at the Iittala glass factory. Its legacy is listed in the documentary, and it includes, among others, the award-winning art objects of the Milan Triennale, i-glasses and Festival.

In 1998, however, Sarpaneva’s employment relationship with Iittala ended with dismissal. The time is remembered in the last episode of the documentary series by his other spouse Marjatta Sarpaneva.

– He lost his friends who were at the glass factory. He lost the place where he had created his career as a glass artist.

However, the career did not end with a break. To finance his next step, Sarpaneva still had to take out a large bank loan. Thanks to that, he went to Italy to create large-scale glass sculptures as a freelance artist.
