Due to overload, the Berlin fire brigade will no longer come to every little ailment. A comment from BZ editor Johannes Malinowski.

Imagine there’s a fire and the fire brigade doesn’t come. Or you’re lying in front of the coffee table having a heart attack and no ambulance is available because someone called 112 with a cold.

The decision to no longer send emergency doctors to ailments is the right one. Patients with harmless abdominal pain or small scratches too often blocked life-saving resources. Society needs to have a sense of when there really is an emergency and danger is imminent.

It’s good that the interior senator is finally tackling the issue. One can only hope that respect for our rescue workers will also grow. The heroes of the fire and rescue services make our city safer.
