The cardboard box contained valuable hockey cards.
A family living in Saskatchewan, Canada has found the “Grail of collectors” in their basement, CBC news.
A cardboard box of ice hockey cards was revealed in the basement, which at the time of writing the story has been auctioned for 1.325 million dollars, or about 1.22 million euros.
According to professional estimates, the price will rise to as much as 2.5–3 million dollars.
The NHL cards in question are from the 1979–80 season, which was Wayne Gretzky’s rookie season in the dollar league. Legenda’s rookie card is a true collector’s rarity.
There were 16 unopened card packs in the cardboard box. According to calculations, they contain a total of about 25-27 Gretzky cards.
Similar cards have been sold in the past at quite varying prices. Pieces in poor condition can be snapped up for just a couple of hundred dollars, while specimens in top condition fetch upwards of $3.75 million.
The Canadian family’s discovery is a small risk investment for collectors, however, because the cardboard box has been standing in the basement for so long. Moisture may have damaged the cards.
