Dutch footballer Quincy Promises, 31, has been sentenced in Amsterdam to 1.5 years in prison for stabbing his cousin. Promes was also sentenced to pay 7,000 euros in damages to his cousin.

The stabbing happened at a family party in July 2020 in the town of Abcoude. The court found Promes guilty of stabbing, but no evidence of attempted murder was found.

Promes got into a fight with his cousin, whom he stabbed in the knee. The fight was the result of an argument over the theft of a valuable necklace from Promes’s aunt.

Promes has been representing Spartak Moscow since February 2021, and he has remained in Russia despite the war in Ukraine. He remained in Russia also during the trial in Holland.

According to his lawyer, the reason for staying in Russia was contractual obligations with Spartak. Promes is also suspected of drug smuggling, which is why he could be arrested immediately in Holland.

According to the lawyer, Promes plans to appeal the sentence.

Promes has played 50 matches in the Dutch national team, in which he has scored seven goals. The latest national team representation is from 2021.
