Long jump Olympic champion and two-time world champion Malaika Mihambo has announced that he will skip the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary in August. Among other things, the news covered the matter Spiegel.

Mihambo, 29, was injured while competing the other week in Kassel, where he stretched his season’s best 693. The German’s main goal of the season went down the drain due to a muscle tear. The tall star is now aiming for full fitness to shine next year at the European Championships in Rome and the Paris Olympics.

Mihambo’s absence is a bad setback for Germany, as he would have been the team’s clear medal favorite in Budapest. Now the country’s medal hopes are focused on the javelin thrower to Julian Weber.

The World Athletics Championships will be held in Budapest, Hungary, from 19 to 27. August.
