The words “Never again” seemed like a mockery last week. 90 years after the Nazis came to power, peaceful, fear-free Jewish life is no longer possible in Berlin.
How good it felt on Sunday to stand at the Brandenburg Gate together with tens of thousands of other people and show our friends in Israel: You are not alone. A testament to the strength of human connection. A clear message of solidarity and compassion.
Such a gesture means that not one less rocket will fly from the Gaza Strip towards Israel. The Hamas terrorists will not release a hostage any faster. But in the end there is the important message to Israel: Berlin is at your side.
At the same time, Israel haters demonstrated a few meters away at Potsdamer Platz. They attack values such as tolerance, respect and humanity. An unbearable conflict in our city.
