A “chaotic cacophony”: Feist lets new single “Borrow Trouble” be heard
Feist has released her new single “Borrow Trouble”. It comes as a preview of their forthcoming sixth studio album, MULTITUDES, which is due out on April 14th. Don’t be alarmed while listening: Towards the end of the song, the singer screams her fears out of her body.
New single: “The cacophony that our thoughts can be”
Leslie Feist, the real name of the Canadian pop singer and guitarist, writes in her statement on Instagram about the creation of the song: “The track began as a contemplative acoustic morality story and has morphed into the sound of ‘Trouble’. It’s a mess that has its own logic.” She tells how chaotic the recordings were and that her filmmaker even convinced her to play the drums herself, even though she couldn’t play the instrument.
The song continues to be like a compelling cacophony, which is what our human mind would be like. The 47-year-old elaborates: “They keep sawing you until your overwhelm releases a supply of air in the form of another idea, a solution that starts with accepting that there is no such thing as perfection.”
Growing fears in song form
On “Borrow Trouble,” the musician talks about her growing fears, accompanied by acoustic guitar instrumentals that fade into strings and drums. She sings, literally translated: “It happens at dawn, before you’ve collected your wits, even before you’re awake. Blame your ears for contradiction, before you even open your eyes the plot surrounding your fear has thickened.”
Feist directed the music video for “Borrow Trouble” along with Mary Rozzi, Colby Richardson and Heather Goodchild. MULTITUDES is the follow-up to the 2017 album PLEASURE and will be released on April 14th. Feist previously shared the songs “Hiding Out in the Open”, “In Lightning” and “Love Who We Are Meant To”.
