A Bomans fairy tale where the king gets the kind of ending you wish for Vladimir Putin

In fairy tales the world is just and orderly. You have a bad guy and a good guy, the bad guy wants the good guy dead, but at the end of the song the bastard is lying comfortably with his paws up and the good guy lives happily ever after. Because the real world is not just and well-arranged, it is a blessing that a brand new fairy tale has been published this week by none other than Godfried Bomans (1913-1971), the best writer in the Netherlands. It is called The Miserable King, was written in 1935 and completed in the 1940s and emerged from the estate of Bomans’ friend Harry Prenen, after which it ended up with a member of the Godfried Bomans Genootschap, who gave it back to Kees Schafrat, owner by bookstore chain Broekhuis and founder of publishing house Sunny Home, which published it on Wednesday on Bomans’ 109th birthday.
