It was a bit of a shock on Tuesday evening when a woman in Castricum found a scorpion in her house. The Animal Ambulance picked up the animal and he was transferred to the reptile shelter in Zwanenburg.
The woman bravely put the scorpion in a cup. The animal ambulance lets you know Facebook know that employees Cor and Ingmar responded to the situation. “They first thought that the animal had died because there was water in the bowl. But the animal completely recovered when they placed it on a cloth,” the animal ambulance said.
The scorpion was transferred yesterday to the reptile shelter in Zwanenburg. Employee Rob tells NH that the scorpion is doing well. “He’s eating well, so he’s doing well.”
The reptile shelter receives about five scorpions every year in a similar way.
Suitcase
It is not known how the scorpion ended up in Castricum, but Rob does know from the other cases. “It’s usually because people have been on holiday in the south of Europe. Once it has crawled into the luggage, it will come out,” he says. “It may even happen that the scorpion defects to the neighbors.”
De Castricumse caught the scorpion in a cup, which Rob thinks is a good way. “A bowl without corners or edges is perfect, because they can’t climb on smooth surfaces. Most people might want to put a piece of paper over it.” According to Rob, the scorpion will not run away if you try to catch it.
Assylum
It is not known where the scorpion from Castricum comes from, but it will remain in the reptile shelter for the rest of its life. “Zoos do not take in animals from nature in Europe,” Rob explains. “The scorpion then stays with us. On average, scorpions do not live very long.” He expects the animal to remain in the shelter for another two to three years.
