That was a bang last night at the general meeting of 1. FC Nürnberg: Thomas Grethlein resigned from the committee after nine years as chairman of the supervisory board. For this reason, former goalkeeper Raphael Schäfer was elected to the club’s supervisory board on Thursday evening. The 44-year-old, who played a total of 389 games for the club and captained the team to cup victory in 2007, made it to the committee with 1,040 of 1,492 votes. In addition to him, ex-professional Chhunly Pagenburg, who received the most support with 1,342 votes, and Matthias Fifka with 928 votes were also elected. Both were previously members of the supervisory board.

The election was eagerly awaited

Thomas Grethlein, who had chaired the supervisory board for nine years, only received 746 votes and therefore left the committee. The result of the election was eagerly awaited in advance. Parts of the organized fan scene had spoken out against the chairman of the supervisory board and openly called on him not to run for office again.

Grethlein was massively criticized

Since the messed up last season, in which relegation could only be secured on the last match day, the 65-year-old has been exposed to massive criticism. Many fans consider sports director Dieter Hecking’s review of this season to be insufficient. In her opinion, Grethlein should have questioned the sporting management even more critically. Although the organized fan scene was on Grethlein’s side for many years, they now wanted a change. In recent home games, banners and posters were repeatedly presented in the north curve calling on the chairman of the supervisory board not to run for office again.

Fans wanted Schäfer as an FCN supervisory board member

An alliance of various fan clubs had already decided on a successor at an early stage: Raphael Schäfer should become the new strong man at the club and bring the necessary sporting competence to the supervisory board. The nine-member supervisory board must now clarify internally whether Schäfer could also take over the chairmanship from Grethlein in the future, as many fans want. Financially, the FCN was able to achieve a significantly better result than in the previous financial year. Sales after the 2022/23 season were 51.2 million euros, increasing by 9.1 million euros. The annual operating profit was 300,000 euros.
