make overThe newly built house of Tessa and Veljko from De Meern lacked warmth and a sofa. The SBS program In love with your house again came by to create atmosphere. “I have already been to many houses for this program, but I have never seen a house without a sofa,” says presenter Kees Tol indignantly. The episode which yesterday attracted nearly 600,000 viewers.
The couple lives in a newly built house with a picturesque appearance and has two daughters. It is mainly Tessa’s wish to keep the room light and fresh with plenty of space. She likes ‘green and real, pure materials’.
For Veljko it is all too light, too happy, too soft and too feminine what his partner finds beautiful. With three female roommates, he looks for his own taste for his office in the attic: old English furniture, a dark wall and a small sofa. Both also let it be known that they would like to have a sofa in the living room to plop down on. The fact that they sometimes sat on the floor to watch television before the makeover was not entirely comfortable.
The problem with the two is that their tastes differ so much that they can’t figure out how to decorate their home in a nice way. It’s not that they never tried. Magnets even hang all kinds of drawings and pictures of furniture on the fridge, intended to give direction to the process.
White, white and more white
How can the house get a more mature look? That’s the question stylist Marianne Luning has to answer. “I’ve been through a lot, but no sofa in such a large living room, that’s new,” Marianne says when she enters. ,,I only see white, white and more white. I don’t think the problem is that they have no taste, but they don’t dare step on each other’s toes and are too nice to each other. I’m going to bring down the office and also create space for Tessa and the children,” Marianne promises. “It will be a complete family home.”
How did Marianne bring the two together? “The depth of Veljko and the powder box of Tessa go into the blender”, it sounds a bit cryptic beforehand. But the effect shows what she means. Tessa’s taste is literally combined on the wall by working with paneling and different corners with their own identity. “The place where both flavors come together is the long wall with panelling. Dark and light on top of each other.” So no concessions, but both flavors together.
This combination has also been extended to the hallway and the stairs. The staircase is dark, has both a chic and a tough look. The backrest is in pastel green, which really appeals to Tessa. The door to the living room is in olive green and it is transparent with smoked glass. That creates warmth, explains Marianne.
In the seating area, Marianne has created a seating area with a huge corner sofa. The contrast with the original empty living room could hardly be greater. “It’s so different. Am I really at home?” Tessa wonders. “The paneling is surprisingly good and beautiful,” says Veljko, who also enjoys the dark dining table. Tessa is especially grateful for the result.
