There is a prohibition of gathering around the Monsignor Nolensplein in Breda from Saturday. The municipality has decided that after continuing nuisance by young people. The prohibition means that young people under 25 are not allowed to come together with more than four people, and applies until the end of September.
Last Sunday a minor boy was put in his leg in the neighborhood. Just before that, local residents saw young people waving knives. But according to the municipality, that stabbing is not the direct reason for the prohibition of gathering.
“There has been unrest and nuisance for local residents for a long time,” a spokesperson responds. “We have received many reports for months and that is not decreasing. So we make this decision after a series of incidents.”
Arson and destruction
In the past year, local residents have complained, among other things, about intimidation, arson and destruction. The municipality took measures several times, such as placing a temporary camera, intensive surveillance and extra deployment of youth work. But nevertheless the nuisance continued.
“Everyone must be able to feel safe in Breda,” says Mayor Paul Depla. “The persistent nuisance requires action and this measure is a necessary step to guarantee safety. With this prohibition of gathering we want to reduce peace and safety in the neighborhood, so that residents and entrepreneurs feel comfortable again in their own environment.”
The prohibition of gathering around the square starts on Saturday and is in force for four months until September 22.
