Today the internet consultation of the proposal to amend the Mental Health Care Act (WVGGZ) and the Care and Urgent Act (WZD) will start. Everyone can think about these laws via the internet consultation. The WVGGZ and WZD arrange the rights of people with a mental illness, intellectual disability or dementia in the event of forced care or forced admission. With the change in the WZD and the WVGGZ, the government wants to improve the feasibility of the laws, so that patients are better protected and forced care is less often necessary.
More room for wishes patients and clients
The WZD and WVGGZ are intended to guarantee the rights of patients when they come into contact with forced care. The evaluation of the laws showed that healthcare providers experienced problems in practice. In the new proposal, the laws must become more feasible. This gives healthcare providers more time to offer appropriate care. Forced care requires careful procedures, but whatever possible for customization. Healthcare providers are given more room to include the wishes and preferences of patients and clients in the treatment. Proposals are also made to improve the coincidence between the WVGGZ, the WZD and the Forensic Care Act (WFZ), so that people can receive care in the most suitable place.
Thinking until 26 May 2025
During the internet consultation until 26 May 2025, everyone (citizens, healthcare professionals, (care) institutions) can make suggestions for improving the laws and rules. After the consultation, all responses will be viewed and the bill will be adjusted, after which a final bill goes to the Council of State for advice. This is followed by a proposal to the House of Representatives as quickly as possible.
