Due to the corona pandemic, our social lives were put to sleep, but our need for support, comfort and fun remained. So what did we do? We bought a pet. The number of pets rose sharply in 2020, according to the annual survey by trade association Dibevo and the Dutch Food Industry Companion Animals (NVG). In 2019, 6.4 percent of Dutch households bought a pet. In 2020 that was 8 percent. Especially dogs and cats were popular. We went from 2.9 million domestic cats in 2019 to 3.1 million cats in 2020.
