3,393 new corona infections were detected in China on Sunday, the highest number since February 2020, when the country last faced a large wave of infections. Until a few days ago, China reported at most hundreds of infections per day. The current outbreak has prompted authorities to place several northeastern towns on lockdown. All schools in Shanghai, where more than 27 million people live, have also been closed. The virus is currently spreading rapidly in more than ten regions.
