In the DFB Cup outside and in the Bundesliga finally arrived in the no man’s land: Werder Bremen continued his negative run on Saturday at 1-2 (0: 1) against VfL Wolfsburg, for which Patrick Wimmer scored both goals.
This was initially responsible for the quality in standard situations of the wolves, but also a crucial mistake by Werder keeper Michael Zetterer and the Bremen user. For the team of coach Ole Werner, it was already the fifth competitive defeat in a row, after the disappointing quarter-finals during the week at Arminia Bielefeld (1: 2), international business is now also out of reach in the Bundesliga.
Zetterer enables Wimmer a back gate
It looks very different in Wolfsburg. With 37 points, the VfL has stuck to the top 6 of the league and, in turn, showed a strong reaction in terms of the cup after leaving in the cup. The first goal from Wimmer, after a corner kick that Zetterer missed, was decisive for this, the Austrian pressed the ball into the goal with his back (6th). It was already the eighth wolve goal after a corner kick best in the league.
After that, Werder could have little accused. The Werner team played well and came to a variety of opportunities – however, Wolfsburg’s goalkeeper Marius Müller got an outstanding day. When Andre Silva was shot to the outer post, the former Schalker did not have to intervene (19th), both the header of Oliver Burke (21st) and in one-on-one against Jens Stage (29th) he then parried strongly to outstanding.
Wimmer-hammer shocked Werder
Bremen missed the opportunities and Wolfsburg then punished it ice cold. Wimmer tried it with a shot from a great distance and was lucky that Milos Veljkovic fought the ball so that Zetterer was too irritated to ward off – 2-0 shortly after the restart (48.).
Werder could not react as quickly to this setback when the next big opportunity came, the cold -ceiling continued to lack – and the strong Müller was still there. The Wolfsburg goalkeeper also won the next private duel against Stage when the midfielder came to an end from six meters (69th).
In fact, there was still a sense of achievement for Werder, but the goal from Mitchell Weiser was too late (90th) – also because Stage still hit the post in the 93rd minute. The more efficient and congratulatory team had a victory, but the Expected goal statistics of 1.91: 0.87 also showed that there would have been significantly more in this afternoon for Bremen.
Special praise for Müller from Hasenhüttl
Like Werder, Wolfsburg was eliminated from the trophy during the week through a 0: 1 at RB Leipzig – and was happy to have rejected a victory immediately. “The departure gave us a lot. It is important that we have shown a reaction directly and have returned to the track of success”said VfL coach Ralph Hasenhüttl in the sports show interview. “But we offered too much if we hadn’t had Müller in goal, it would have been really uncomfortable.”
Bremen in Leverkusen, Wolfsburg against St. Pauli
