The German tennis star Alexander Zverev in Mexico actually wanted to bring himself in shape for the Masters in early March. However, nothing came of it.

Alexander Zverev had probably imagined it differently. On Instagram, the German tennis-ass was enthusiastic to have made it into the second round at the ATP tournament in Acapulco in Mexico. But there the 27-year-old failed surprisingly due to the 19-year-old American Learner Tien-3: 6 and 4: 6.

After only 88 minutes, the defeat was sealed against number 83 in the world. Not the first defeat in a short time: Zverev had already left in the quarterfinals at the ATP-500 tournament in Rio de Janeiro last week. In Acapulco, too, after the last mixed appearances for the Masters in Indian Wells, he wanted to get shape in the early March – but the project failed. Already in the first round he had revealed difficulties at 6: 7 (2: 7), 6: 3, 6: 4 against the Italian Matteo Arnaldi.

For Zverev, Acapulco is a place with ups and downs. In 2021 he celebrated the tournament victory there, a year later he was disqualified after a racket attack on the referee chair-an incident that he himself described as the “worst moment of my life”. In 2023 he refrained from participating, in 2024 this came against Daniel Altmaier in the first round. This now also lost his match against the Czech Tomas Machac 6: 7 (3: 7), 1: 6.
