From March 12th to March 16th, the best ski jumping as part of the World Cup at the RAW Air in Vikersund will start. However, there is a concern just under two weeks in advance.
In mid -March, the best ski jumpers will start at the RAW Air. The competition takes place as part of the World Cup and attracts numerous fans. But a good two and a half weeks before the event in Vikersund (Norway), organizers and residents are worried. The reason for this is a stench that lays down all over the city.
Thomas Hovde Marthinsen, a resident of Vikersund said in an interview with the public service broadcasting NRK: “It is tragic for the whole village when we become known as the place.” In addition to NRK, the Norwegian newspaper “Dramens Tidende” also reported on the unpleasant smell, which is probably “decaying corpses”, according to the neighbors.
It comes from a field that is around a kilometer as the crow flies from the RAW-Air area. According to the NRK, around “800 tons of sewage sludge” were released on the field. This should be good for the soil and the planned food production there. Accordingly, the municipality of Modum, which is around five kilometers away from Vikersund, approved the order and disposal of the sewage sludge.
In order to get the smell away, compost has apparently been put on the sewage sludge, but this is said to have brought nothing. Local residents Martinsen therefore said NRK: “I find it embarrassing. In three weeks a RAW-Air party will take place, and it cannot take place.”
Another resident, Lena Kjemperud, also explained the smell as follows: “It is a mixture of ammonia and cat piss. It smells like Kot.” Kjemperud also explained with a view to the winter sports highlight: “Vikersund should be known for his ski jump, not for his stench.”
According to the agricultural department head of the municipality of Modum, the procedure is made five times a year with the sewage sludge. Usually there is not such a stench. “We don’t know exactly why, but we think it has to do with the weather, the wind and the wind direction,” said Anna Arneberg. It is to be hoped that the weather conditions will improve up to the RAW Air.
