Red alert at Chelsea! After the far-reaching sanctions against owner Roman Abramovich and the associated restrictions for the club, the accounts and credit cards of the reigning Champions League winner have now also been frozen.
As the English media unanimously reported on Friday, Bank Barclays has temporarily blocked all Chelsea FC accounts and credit cards.
The Blues therefore no longer have access to their financial resources and, according to “Sky Sports”, cannot even finance the smallest things. Larger items such as player salaries can therefore not be paid out.
As the reason for the account suspension, Barclays stated that they wanted to examine the special license issued by the government for the club more closely. The point is to determine what is even possible for Chelsea under the sanctions laid down by the British government.
“That puts the club under even more pressure,” the Times quoted an unnamed source from the club environment as saying. Now it is very difficult to maintain daily operations, they say.
At Chelsea, according to “Sky”, they hope for a quick solution and release of the accounts.
The big problem in the eyes of the bank is the continued direct connection to Roman Abramovich. Although the account is in the name of FC Chelsea, it still belongs to the Russian oligarch. And the bank is expressly forbidden from doing business with Abramovich.
The Blues have previously faced numerous restrictions.
Among other things, the club was no longer allowed to sell day tickets. The sale of merchandise was also prohibited. In addition, the Londoners have been given a temporary transfer ban and are not allowed to submit any new offers for a contract extension to their current players.
