Defending champion Bayern Munich surprisingly missed the final at the final tournament of the BBL Cup.
The top favorite lost its semi -finals in Weißenfels against host Syntainics MBC with 93:95 (43:48) and thus sensationally resigned. Martin Breunig scored the crucial points for the MBC in the final second and thus converted the 3,000 spectators into a Tollhaus.
The opponents are the Bamberg Baskets, who defeated the Frankfurt Skyliners 76:63 (35:31) in the second semi -finals. With 20 points, Ibrahim Watson-Boye was the best point collector of the Bamberger points collectors, who earned an eight-point lead in the first quarter and then no longer gave it out. The final will take place on Sunday (4 p.m.).
Bavaria’s Voigtmann: “That was too little”
“That was definitely too little today”, said Munich’s center Johannnes Voigtmann at “Dyn”. “We missed our first goal of the season. Now we have two more”said Voigtmann with a view to the German championship and reaching the playoffs in the Euroleague. Bayern had already lost in Weißenfels in the Bundesliga.
Tension until the end
In the not completely sold-out town hall of Weißenfels, the team of world champion coach Gordon Herbert actually got off to a good start and quickly settled in the first quarter to seven points (15: 8). After that, however, the big favorite made some negligence, so that the hosts were able to equalize and even turn the game until the break (48:43).
After the change of sides, Bayern star Carsen Edwards first turned up. After only two points in the first 20 minutes, the Point Guard from the USA now hit better and brought Bayern back into the lead. The MBC could not be shaken off, the game wiped back and forth.
Everything looked like an extension when Breunig grabbed the rebound and then put the ball into the basket to win. The last litter of Bayern Center Johanns Voigtmann missed the basket – the big surprise was perfect. Bayern coach Herbert must now celebrate his birthday on Sunday without a final participation.
