De Wolf shows itself less in Drenthe. A report from Bij12 shows that 17 wolves were observed in the period from mid -May to mid -October. That is less than early 2024. There may be more wolves in Drenthe active.

17 have been seen on recent camera images, reports Bij12. That is the organization that makes the damage processes after wolven attacks for provinces. “But if certain wolves are not spotted on images, it does not mean that they are not present in the area. Camera images remain snapshots,” says Myrna Fraters of the organization.

At the beginning of 2024 there were an estimated 22 wolves in Drenthe. According to brothers, that number could still be the same, but the number could be just as well lower. For example, because wolves were killed by collisions or started roaming to another place.

Bij12 states that it can see through recent camera images that there are ten wolves in the Drents-Friese Wold on the border between Drenthe and Friesland. It is a pack consisting of parents, seven cubs and a yearling. The latter is a wolf that is now a year old.

There are an estimated seven wolves in Midden-Drenthe. It is possible that one of them would roam and the animal has left for Germany. But that is no longer known about that at the moment.

Bij12 has in possession of just over half of the Drenthe Wolves DNA, collected after, for example, an attack on a sheep. That is not there yet, but those wolves are spotted on a camera.

Between the months of February and May 2024, 32 claims were received in Drenthe. In 26 cases it turned out to be an attack by the wolf. Four times it turned out to be a dog. Twice DNA analysis did not yield any results.

In most cases, sheep were the bobbin, namely 15 times. The rest of the attacked animals consists of cattle, horses and ponies, a lama and a goat.

This year three wolves died in the Netherlands due to a natural death. In two of the three animals, research has been done and it seems likely that they were killed by another wolf. A possible explanation for this is mutual competition and competition between the animals. In these cases it concerns wolves in other parts of the country.
