The breast increase is one of the most requested surgical procedures worldwide. However, many myths and misinformation persist on the subject. In this guide, the most common myths and the truths supported by science and clinical experience.

Myth: prostheses must be changed every 10 years

Previously, the replacement replacement was recommended every 10 years, but this indication has become obsolete. The duration of an implant depends on factors such as the level of physical activity, the practice of high -impact sports or significant body changes such as motherhood or weight fluctuations. The new implants are designed to last much more than a decade, which makes a preventive replacement unnecessary.

TRUE: The need for replacement is evaluated individually

There is no fixed deadline to change implants. Factors such as aging of the material, desired aesthetic changes, effects of motherhood and breastfeeding, menopause or complications such as the breakdown of the implant or capsular contracture determine whether a replacement is necessary. Each case must be evaluated in a personalized way.

Myth: prostheses can explode on a plane

There is a belief that breast implants can exploit in airplanes due to the booth pressure. This is false. Current implants are highly resistant and can support pressure changes without risk of damage. Even hostesses, exposed to constant pressure variations, use implants without inconveniences. Only in extreme situations, as in combat planes under intense G forces, they could be affected.

Truth: implants have evolved significantly

Technological advances have allowed the creation of lighter and more functional implants. An example is the new generation gel, which weighs up to 30% less than previous models, reducing the impact of gravity on breast tissues.

Myth: All plastic surgeons are the same

Not all plastic surgeons are certified by recognized medical societies. In Buenos Aires, for example, there are more than 1,000 accredited plastic surgeons, but the amount of implants sold suggests that many surgeries are carried out by unbelievable professionals. It is essential to verify that the surgeon is registered in a medical society and has the appropriate training. It is recommended to consult the page of the Plastic Surgery Society of Buenos Aires (www.scpba.org.ar) and La Sacper.

TRUE: It is key to be operated in a high complexity center

Even with optimal pre -surgical, complications may arise. Therefore, it is essential to choose a center with infrastructure and medical equipment trained to address any eventuality.

Breast implants

Myth: Breast surgery is only to increase breast size

This procedure is not limited to the breast increase. Many women turn to surgery for breast reconstruction after a mastectomy, to reduce breast size for health reasons or to improve their shape. In addition, gender statement surgery is also an increasing option.

TRUE: There are different types of breast surgery

The procedures vary according to the patient’s needs. The most common include the breast increase with prostheses, breast reduction, reconstruction after a mastectomy and mastopexia, which lifts fallen chest. There are also interventions for gender transition.

Breast implants

Myth: The recovery is long and painful

It is believed that breast surgery implies a prolonged and painful recovery. However, technical advances have revolutionized this aspect. In 1997, the Danish doctor Henrik Kehlet introduced the concept of “Fast Track Surgery”, which promotes a faster and less pain recovery. In 2001, surgeon John Tebbetts developed the “Dual Plane” technique to accelerate the recovery of the breast increase.

In 2024, I published a retrospective study based on 2,906 patients undergoing breast surgery with the same team and recovery protocol. The results, obtained through a binary regression model, demonstrated that 95.3% of the patients recovered completely in the first 24 hours. This confirms that modern breast surgery allows rapid and minimal recovery, allowing patients to resume their usual routine long earlier than expected. Medical evidence and technical advances have transformed breast surgery, dismantling myths and providing personalized and safe solutions for each patient.
