“It could just be 20 degrees on Wednesday”, according to weatherman Wilfred Janssen of Weerplaza. We owe those spring-like temperatures to a special weather phenomenon: the omega blockade. The meteorologist explains.
This Friday afternoon the sun is still shining exuberantly, but the weekend will be a different story, according to the weatherman. “It will be gray and there is a chance of some rain, but that will mainly be in the evenings and night.”
But patience pays off, because next week temperatures will rise and the sun will come out from behind the clouds. “Wednesday there will be plenty of sun and the temperature could rise to the first 20 degrees of this year.”
A so-called omega blockade is the cause. “The weather phenomenon gets its name from the pattern of weather areas that is shaped like the Greek letter omega (O). A strong high pressure area in this shape blocks the low pressure areas around it, keeping the good weather in one place for a long time.”
However, for most sunbathers, greasing is not yet necessary. “The sun factor is not that high yet, but people who are sensitive to the sun should of course apply.”
