Baumel wanted to help an accident-held Alfa Romeo team on Wednesday evening at the currently held historical rally Monte Carlo, had got out of his van and then recorded by a Renault Clio, reports “La Provence”.

After the accident, Baumel was conscious, brought to an surrounding hospital with serious leg injuries and put it into an artificial coma. The 73-year-old driver of the Renault Clio and her 70-year-old passenger had only suffered minor injuries that alcohol and drug tests were negative. Mathieu has already been operated on, but we have to wait until we know more.” Pedro Teixeira, deputy prosecutor of Reims, continued: “His condition is no longer lifelong.”

On Saturday, the family then made a message to Baumel over 67,000 followers on Instagram: “Mathieu was the victim of a traffic accident on Wednesday evening. He is currently in the hospital. While we are waiting for news about his health, we would like to thank you for your support.” When and whether Baumel can continue his motorsport career is still unclear.
