Immense chestnut
In terms of greenery, the streets have also been given a different look. A total of 22 trees were felled, but 25 were returned. Characteristic eye-catchers, such as the immense chestnut for the Vermeer bookshop, were not allowed to give way, according to Van Klinken.
“In the case of this chestnut, we decided not to extend the sewage system at that point. This way we were able to spare the root system of the tree.” Also striking is the vertical facade planting that has to creep up to find its way to the other side via a cable stretched over the street.

Suspended lighting has been placed above the street in Derksstraat and Noorderstraat. In that lighting there are LED lamps in the form of letters that display a number of texts: Such as Mirakels Mooi Ja, Umgang and Aander Maol Wat Langer. This street art comes from singer Bert Kamping and artist Frederike Top.
Togetherness, inviting and meeting were the underlying ideas here, according to Kamping, who was also present. Visitors will soon be able to request explanations about the texts via a QR code.
