Borussia Dortmund will be faced with a pioneering decision in the next few days: Who should take over the unsettled team after that of Nuri Sahin? And what does the plan look like for the next few years? TV expert Stefan Effenberg believes that there is actually only one meaningful candidate for BVB.

“You need a trainer who brings in discipline again. That’s why Niko Kovac would be the right solution,” emphasized Stefan Effenberg on Sunday in the “Doppelpass” at “Sport1”.

At his stations in Wolfsburg and Frankfurt, Kovac demonstrated that he could quickly form a team that plays attractive and successful, argued the Bayern icon. In addition, Kovac is the right trainer to again spark the necessary “greed” at BVB.

Because for Effenberg it is clear that the chief coach is the formative figure when it comes to culture in the club. His clear demand for the BVB leadership around managing director Lars Ricken and sports director Sebastian Kehl is therefore to think in the coaching position in the long term.

BVB is probably only looking for a transition trainer

Finally, it was said that the black and yellow only searches for a firefighter by the end of the season – in the hope that desired solutions will be on the market.

Effenberg believes that Borussia makes the “next big mistake” with this strategy. “You give the players another alibi. You shouldn’t do that,” said the former midfielder.

In his view, there is nothing against offering Niko Kovac a contract by summer 2026 or even longer. Kovac himself said on Thursday that he was open to a new challenge. However, there is no contact with BVB.

According to information from RTL/NTV and sport.de Roger Schmidt is currently the top candidate of Borussia on the Sahin succession. “Bild” reported that the 57-year-old was open to BVB engagement from summer. Talks should already run.
