Return finally failed: Benkovic finds a new club
01/20/2025 – 1:32 p.mReading time: 1 min.

Eintracht Braunschweig’s hope has finally been dashed: Filip Benkovic is not returning to the Oker. The central defender signs elsewhere.
With the speculation surrounding Filip Benkovic’s return to Eintracht Braunschweig, there was also hope for a real top-class player for the second half of the season in the 2nd Bundesliga. But that’s finally over now. The central defender has found a new club and has signed with Swedish first division club AIK Solna for two years.
The 27-year-old Croatian is completely convinced of his decision. “It is an incredible feeling and an honor to represent such a large and historic club like AIK,” Benkovic is quoted as saying in the statement from his new employer. He wants to “bring home more titles” with the twelve-time Swedish champion.
In recent weeks there have been rumors about the defender’s possible return to Eintracht, where he appeared a total of 19 times in the 2022/23 season and turned out to be a mainstay in the center of defense.
Coach Daniel Scherning had confirmed his interest in the defender to the “Braunschweiger Zeitung”. Last week, however, there were increasing signs that nothing would come of the comeback in the Eintracht jersey. This is now certainty.
Instead of a relegation battle in the German lower house, he now wants to play at the top in Sweden. He was most recently under contract with Turkish club Trabzonspor on loan. After returning to his parent club Udinese Calcio, his contract ended there too. Since then, Benkovic has been without a club.
