In the DEL, ammonia leaked during the Fischtown Pinguins’ game against ERC Ingolstadt and the game was canceled. Now the league has made a verdict.

No points for the Pinguins: The German Ice Hockey League scored the game 5-0 for ERC Ingolstadt – and sentenced the Fischtown Pinguins to a fine. The DEL announced this on Monday afternoon. The DEL did not provide any information about the amount of the fine.

The official statement from the DEL states: “According to the hall operator and the Bremerhaven license club, the reason for the damage was an improper drilling in the goal anchoring. Since the license club is responsible for the actions of the hall operator’s employees in accordance with the game regulations, the club was charged with… The preliminary investigation attributed the blame for the game being abandoned.” Penguins manager Sebastian Furchner was unhappy about the verdict because the decision had been different in previous cases, “but we take it with sporting composure and accept the decision.”

When the Bremerhaven ice arena had to be evacuated shortly before the start of the second third, the guests were already 2-0 ahead. Fabio Wagner (8th) and Philipp Krauss (13th) were successful for Bayern.

Fishtown home game postponed

Othmar Gimpel, managing director of the Bremerhaven town hall, shows the damaged area in the ice arena two days after the accident.

According to town hall manager Othmar Gimpel, it may be several weeks before the ice at the penguins’ home is usable again. Accordingly, the Fischtown home game against Iserlohn cannot take place there on Friday. The game was therefore postponed to Wednesday, February 12, 2025. The game still starts at 7:30 p.m.

It will be some time before the Fischtown Pinguins can train again in the Bremerhaven ice arena. That’s how long the team is avoiding the Paradice in Bremen: “Our team will complete three units in Bremen this week,” explained Furchner and thanked those responsible in Bremen for providing the ice time.

The Bremerhaven ice surface has now been thawed and the concrete floor in the damaged area has been opened. According to Gimpel, the damage cannot yet be quantified. In addition to the repair costs, the town hall could face further payments. The DEL could possibly also demand compensation from the city of Bremerhaven.
