Union Berlin had already announced that it would appeal the DFB sports court’s ruling. Now the case goes a step higher.
The case continues: As announced, Union Berlin has lodged an appeal before the DFB Federal Court against the sports court’s ruling on the “scandalous game in Köpenick”. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed this at the request of the Sports Information Service (SID) on Monday.
According to Union President Dirk Zingler, the DFB violated its own legal system with the ruling. The focus of the dispute is the decision to continue the game against VfL Bochum that took place on December 14th after a lighter was thrown at goalkeeper Patrick Drewes. Zingler emphasized that continuing the game was a decision that was at the discretion of referee Martin Petersen.
After an oral hearing, the DFB sports court retroactively rated the encounter 0-2 against Union. The game had previously ended in a 1-1 draw. After Union’s objection and the associated reasons, the decision now lies with the DFB Federal Court. This will clarify whether the procedure will be decided in writing or whether there will be another oral hearing.
