Nicolette van Dam is very annoyed that she and her sweetheart Bas Smit have received so much criticism for their disrespectful behavior in Spain. “They really want to take you down immediately.”
Bas Smit and Nicolette van Dam belong to the category of celebrities that many people are annoyed by and that is mainly due to their own behavior, for example last November. The Spanish government had then declared three days of national mourning to remember the victims of the storm, but Bas and Nicolette did not care about that.
“They’re getting up!”
The floods caused hundreds of deaths. Logically, countless festivities were canceled, but Bas and Nicolette just wanted to celebrate Halloween and therefore went to a local restaurant in elaborate costumes. Because they were making a lot of noise, guests even stepped up and laughed on Insta.
Even without that national mourning, it was already misplaced how they harassed the people. Bas screeched: “Look, everyone is here in Brunello Cucinelli! Those people just stand up! They just go away! They really go away!”
Huge disaster
The criticism of the couple was really massive, because of course we also sympathized with the many Spanish victims in the Netherlands. “A huge disaster has occurred here in Spain. It doesn’t really show respect to go out on the street dressed like that,” someone said, for example.
Only after massive uproar did Bas and Nicolette decide to leave their home posts from Instagram, but they simply do not see that. And now, two and a half months later, Nicolette is playing the role of victim. She complains in the Dragonfly about the media attention their misconduct has generated.
Out of respect
Nicolette defends herself. “We celebrate Halloween fanatically every year. There were Halloween parties all over Spain that evening and Spanish children went door to door as always. The Spaniards had their faces painted, everything was dressed. We were with our children in a restaurant where the employees were also dressed up and there was a Spanish band playing.”
“So all the festivities around Halloween continued as usual. We were alerted to the situation by our followers and we immediately deleted our messages out of respect, because we obviously never wanted to offend anyone. It was widely reported in the media, some people like to see where they can catch us.”
Own troubles
Almost all celebrities do something for charity, including Bas and Nicolette. She believes that more attention should be paid to this, and not to their misconduct. “When we do an action for a good cause, no one hears about it, but at a time when they can bring us down, these people do so immediately.”
Why then? “When you’re in the spotlight and your life is so public, that happens. People can forget their own troubles by criticizing someone else. Fine. It’s part of it. But we do everything with the best intentions and the people close to us know that. That is the most important thing.”
Injustice
When asked whether the criticism doesn’t bother her, Nicolette answers: “Oh, certainly, that’s not what I mean. I am the last person who can stand injustice and I really don’t like it. It’s a shame that there is so much negativity online, but I just can’t deal with it that much.”
“We discuss it with each other at home, including with the children. I explain to them that our lives are sometimes under a magnifying glass. I’ve been in the business for so long that I’m used to it by now.”
