Confusion about Benkovic: Eintracht return off the table?

Rumors about Filip Benkovic returning to Eintracht Braunschweig have recently raised eyebrows. However, the situation surrounding the defender is becoming increasingly unclear.
It could have been so nice for the fans of Eintracht Braunschweig. Within a few days, two transfer hits were on the horizon. The speculation about two spectacular return campaigns noticeably brightened the depressed mood among the second-to-last team in the 2nd Bundesliga.
Almost at the same time as Hoffmann was signed, a second well-known name appeared in the media. Filip Benkovic – it was said – was about to get involved again with BTSV. The pay-TV channel “Sky” has already reported the return of the central defender as fixed. The “Braunschweiger Zeitung” also reported, although much more cautiously, on the mind games of the parties involved.
Despite being in 17th place in the table, there was something like optimism among the Eintracht fans. A turnaround initiated by two transfer coups? Out of the table cellar with the returning duo?
But the mini-euphoria over two hopeful BTSV comebacks has now been dampened. There is now a lot of confusion surrounding Benkovic’s personality. The deal has fallen through, writes the “Braunschweiger Zeitung” and speaks of a rejection by the BTSV. The 27-year-old Croatian prefers a move to Ligue 1 instead of returning to his old place of work. It should be Le Havre AC.
Shortly afterwards, the French “Foot Mercato” also reported on discussions between Benkovic and the second-to-last team from France’s elite league. However, the negotiations failed. It is said that signing the defender is off the table in the port city.
What will actually happen next with Benkovic seems to be completely open – including whether Eintracht is perhaps back in the running or whether the defensive man has further offers. In any case, amid all the initial euphoria when the rumors emerged, slight doubts were mixed in.
The central defender has been without a club since last summer and his fitness level is a big unknown. He played his last competitive game for his former Turkish club Trabzonspor in May 2024. He was loaned there from Udinese Calcio. After the loan return, the Italians were over in August.
Benkovic appeared on the pitch 19 times for Eintracht in the 2022/23 season and proved to be one of the team’s mainstays in the center of defense. However, it seems increasingly unlikely that there will be further missions.
