Sakari Manninen got himself sent off and suspended in Wednesday’s match of the Swiss league.

Manninen, who plays for Genève-Servette, shook the referee in the back with a cross stick while in goal. Manninen first scuffled with the EV Zug player, until the opponent’s push caused the Finn to lose his balance and stagger further away.

A referee had skated in between while returning to his grappling partner. Despite this, Manninen poked the referee between the players with a cross stick, who fell to the surface of the ice.

Manninen immediately realized his mistake. He apologized for the situation and did not bite the obvious shower command.

Later, the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation’s disciplinary delegation announced that they would investigate the case. Manninen was suspended for one match for the time being.

Manninen, who won two world championships and an Olympic gold in the ranks of the Lions, has been one of his team’s most effective players this season. In 34 matches, there have been 13 goals and 23 assists leading to goals.

Zug won the match 7–4.
