The Netherlands wants sanctions to become more enforceable and effective by strengthening compliance, both at national and European level. By organizing a special conference for national and international stakeholders Minister Veldkamp of Foreign Affairs wants to work towards stricter compliance and a level playing field at EU and international level.

Conference on Sanctions Compliance

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is organizing a conference on January 15 on compliance with sanctions measures. This event brings together policy makers, legal experts, financial institutions and business representatives to discuss how to effectively enforce sanctions at national, European and international levels.

Sanctions are an important tool to hold countries, organizations and individuals accountable for their actions. For example, the sanctions against Russia should make it as difficult as possible to wage war against Ukraine and increase the pressure to stop this aggression – or co-responsibility for it. However, the purpose of sanctions depends on effective compliance with the measures. It is therefore important to continuously check whether these sanctions are feasible and effective. This conference offers a platform to exchange information, share signals and learn from each other’s experiences. This in turn helps the Netherlands and other member states to close new circumvention paths.

Program

The conference will be opened by Minister Veldkamp of Foreign Affairs, who will give a speech on the importance of stricter compliance with sanctions. Special advisor to Ukrainian President Zelensky, Vladyslav Vlasiuk, EU sanctions envoy David O’Sullivan, Finnish Foreign Minister Eline Valtonen and Latvian Foreign Minister Baiba Braže will also address the audience.

Exhibition

At the conference location there is also an exhibition on used Russian war materials that, despite the applicable sanctions, contain Western components. The exhibition was set up by NAKOa forensic research institute from Ukraine.
