The last game had consequences
Referee blows the whistle for the BVB game after a break of almost two years

Sascha Stegemann has not refereed a BVB game since April 2023. Because the last mission was followed by death threats because of a bad decision.
Sascha Stegemann will referee the Bundesliga clash between Borussia Dortmund and champions Bayer Leverkusen on Friday (from 8.30 p.m. in the live ticker on t-online). This was announced by the German Football Association (DFB). The decision is a spicy one, because Stegemann and BVB have a special past.
In April 2023, the referee was on duty in the game between Borussia Dortmund and VfL Bochum and overlooked a clear penalty that BVB should have received. Black and Yellow players and officials were beside themselves with the title race at the time.
But that’s not all: individual BVB fans even went one step further. In the Sport1 “Doppelpass” he reported death threats at the time. There were “very specific threats,” he said. Stegemann “unfortunately felt compelled to file a criminal complaint.” Temporary protective measures were also discussed.
More than 630 days after the game in Bochum, Stegemann is once again refereeing a BVB game. He is not the only referee who was allowed to referee Dortmund again this season after a long break. Felix Zwayer also had not refereed a game involving the black and yellow since December 2021. On the first Bundesliga matchday of the current season it happened again. The DFB nominated him for the BVB game against Eintracht Frankfurt. Dortmund ended up winning the home game 2-0.
